Server Java Runtime Environment (Server JRE). For deploying Java applications on servers. Includes toolsfor JVM monitoring and tools commonly required for server applications, but does not include browserintegration (Java plug-in), auto-update, or an installer.
@RichTrouton's answer might be correct on what Chrome uses i.e. a 32 bit JRE but this answer explained /usr/bin/java issues. Note that the simple Oracle JRE does not update /usr/bin/java and I think Apple's later installs do not touch this either. Your browser does not use /usr/bin/java but directly looks in /System or /Library
NetBeans IDE cannot be installed.Java (JRE) found on your computer but JDK 7 update 10 or newer is required. Please download and install the latest update of JDK 7 from and restart NetBeans installation.
New- IANA Data 2015a - JDK 8u45 contains IANA time zone data version 2015a. JRE Expiration Date - The JRE expires whenever a new release with security vulnerability fixes becomes available. Critical patch updates, which contain security vulnerability fixes, are announced one year in advance. This JRE (version 8u45) will expire with the release of the next critical patch update scheduled for July 14, 2015. Bug Fixes- Area: tools/jar- Synopsis: Improve jar file handling- Starting with JDK 8u45 release, the jar tool no longer allows the leading slash "/" and ".." (dot-dot) path component in zip entry file name when creating new and/or extracting from zip and jar file. If needed, the new command line option "-P" should be used explicitly to preserve the dot-dot and/or absolute path component. Area: deploy/webstart- Synopsis: jnlp app with nested "resource" section fails with NPE on load in jre8u40- A jnlp application, with nested resources tags within a java or j2se tag, can throw an NPE. The issue is now fixed. The resources tag should be used only if the java is actually used. Known Issues- Area: core-libs/jdk.nashorn- Synopsis: Finally blocks inlined incorrectly.- Nashorn has known issues where it incorrectly compiles try/finally constructs. For more information on this issue and a workaround, see Try/finally compilation issues wiki page.
Regarding Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap,[3] version 19 is the latest one, and versions 17, 11 and 8 are the currently supported long-term support (LTS) versions, where Oracle Customers will receive Oracle Premier Support. Java 8 LTS the last free software public update for commercial use was released by Oracle in March 2022, while Oracle continues to release no-cost public Java 8 updates for development[3] and personal use indefinitely.[4] Java 7 is no longer publicly supported. For Java 11, long-term support will not be provided by Oracle for the public; instead, the broader OpenJDK community, as Eclipse Adoptium or others, is expected to perform the work.[5]
Java SE 5 entered its end-of-public-updates period on April 8, 2008; updates are no longer available to the public as of November 3, 2009. Updates were available to paid Oracle customers until May 2015.[3]
Java 6 reached the end of its supported life in February 2013, at which time all public updates, including security updates, were scheduled to be stopped.[70][71] Oracle released two more updates to Java 6 in March and April 2013, which patched some security vulnerabilities.[72][73]
Some developers have noticed an issue introduced in this release which causes debuggers to miss breakpoints seemingly randomly.[80] Sun has a corresponding bug, which is tracking the issue. The workaround applies to the Client and Server VMs.[81] Using the -XX:+UseParallelGC option will prevent the failure. Another workaround is to roll back to update 13, or to upgrade to update 16.
Java 7 is a major update that was launched on July 7, 2011[112] and was made available for developers on July 28, 2011.[113] The development period was organized into thirteen milestones; on June 6, 2011, the last of the thirteen milestones was finished.[113][114] On average, 8 builds (which generally included enhancements and bug fixes) were released per milestone. The feature list at the OpenJDK 7 project lists many of the changes.
Oracle issued public updates to the Java 7 family on a quarterly basis[135] until April 2015 when the product reached the end of its public availability.[136] Further updates for JDK 7, which continued until July 2022, are only made available to customers with a support contract.[137]
Java 8 is not supported on Windows XP[185] but as of JDK 8 update 25, it can still be installed and run under Windows XP.[186] Previous updates of JDK 8 could be run under XP by downloading archived zip format file and unzipping it for the executable. The last version of Java 8 could run on XP is update 251.But its components compatibility starts to break on unsupported OS in early build during Java 8 updates development.[citation needed]
From October 2014, Java 8 was the default version to download (and then again the download replacing Java 9) from the official website.[187] "Oracle will continue to provide Public Updates and auto updates of Java SE 8, Indefinitely for Personal Users".[4]
I went to the Oracle Java downloads page and downloaded JDK 8 (it is possible to install the JRE, but not with the installer provided by Oracle). The installation process is straight forward, and I confirmed Java SE 8 was installed correctly, but I still received the alert. Note that the version referenced throughout this post (1.8.0_45) may not be current as you are reading this. You may need to update the version numbers to match the latest Java release.
Beware! The latest JRE installer from Oracle includes adware. Oracle recently released Java 8 Update 45, and added an Ask.com browser toolbar in the installer. At time of writing, it is Step 5 on the Java.com Mac installation help page. I highly recommend deselecting the option to install this additional piece of software. If you accidentally install it, you should uninstall the extension from any and all browsers. You will also have to change your homepage back away from Ask.com.
